From Plumfield Moms review: "One of the most perfect children’s adventure novels I have ever read. My only regret is in taking so darn long to get to it." I (Jill) agree and wish I'd read it as a child!
Four young sailors—Captain John, Mate Susan, Able-seaman Titty, and Ship's-boy Roger—set out on their sailboat, the Swallow, to camp on a mysterious island. Their peaceful expedition transforms into an exciting rivalry with the Amazon's crew, then a daring confrontation with the notorious Captain Flint. A thrilling tempest brings their unforgettable summer adventure to a dramatic close.
The author lived in the hills of England's Lake District, not far from the very lake he knew as a child. It is this lake he describes, which bears a resemblance to Lake Windermere (10.5 miles long!), where the Swallows and Amazons sailed their ships, and followed their life of grand adventure.
The cover, from the first UK edition in 1930, is being paired with Helene Carter's 1931 illustrations from the first US edition and the author's drawings from 1938. Take a look at the preview to see some of the illustrations.
